To my great surprise, we have had several inquiries about homeschooling in Utah in the last month, so I have updated this website. Please let me know if you have any questions. We are a small, but friendly group of homeschoolers that are united in our faith, but have a variety of experiences, interests and children. We recently celebrated All Saints' Day together and I was heartened to spend time with fellow Catholic homeschooling families.

Every year I feel so glad that I have the opportunity to start over. New activities. Less activities. New curriculum. Maybe no curriculum in some subjects. There are days and weeks when I love homeschooling because of the flexibility to say, "today we play with salt dough!" or to get drawn into an extended discussion about child labor laws. (This conversation was brought on by the Monday Labor Day holiday.) I mostly love learning alongside my kids. There is so much that I do not know and that the children teach me. It amazes me! It's rather exciting to be participating in the education of my kids as well as myself. It's a bit like being a disciple of Christ who is continually teaching me humility. Amazing!
After quite a bit of online discussion, we have decided to continue our loose organization without participating in a co-op. We have yet to set a fall schedule of events. If you have ideas to contribute, please speak up.
Dear fellow Catholic Homeschooling Families,In the spring we discussed forming a co-op on Thursday mornings for interested families. If you are still interested, please email or Facebook the group! We discussed meeting 2x a month, alternately at St. Rose of Lima in Layton and Blessed Sacrament in Sandy. We discussed meeting a total of 7 times in the fall (2x in September, October, November, and 1x in December). If you are still interested and willing to roll up your sleeves and help, will you please respond with what you would be willing to teach? In order to make this viable, we need teachers for two or three age groups :ages 6-10/ ages 11 and up/ under 5. We can rotate the groups so that both the older and younger children would have the opportunity to do each activity.
Here is an example of a possible schedule:Gather at 9:00 Morning Prayer/Songs/info all together9:30 Class (two classes +nursery simultaneously) 10:45 Class (two classes + nursery simultaneously) 12:00 Lunch12:30 clean up and leave or field trip possibilities In order for things to run smoothly, we need at least six moms to volunteer to teach and one to send emails, organize, etc. Possibly we need another mom to work as a substitute teacher in case someone is sick. There was some discussion of visiting the convent, hosting a couple of vocations talks, so I included time for this at the end of the day, but we could certainly do these things at other times. Also, if you are available to come to the Castle Park Picnic, this would be a great time to discuss and plan! Many of us have expressed interest in a Catholic Homeschooling co-op of some sort. The following are some of the things we have discussed: meeting twice a month, one at a "northern" location (potentially St. Rose of Lima in Layton) and once at a "southern" location (potentially Blessed Sacrament in Sandy) on the second and fourth THURSDAY of the month (starting in September) from 10am-2pm. We would break for lunch between sessions. Because many of us are using curriculums that cover core subjects, our COOPS would offer classes with subjects like foreign language, cooking/home economics, science experiments, toddler activities, liturgical calendar activities, speech/debate, etc. What we need to know from all of you in order to get the ball rolling on putting together a program is who would be interested in participating, ages of children, classes you'd like to see offered, classes you'd like to teach or how you might be able to help (i.e. part of the nursery rotation), etc. I will attempt to post a Poll, but feel free to post a comment. Let's get the discussion rolling!!! Please feel free to join the discussion on Facebook.
See More Recently, I have been reading a couple of books that have encouraged me and inspired me as a homeschool mom. The irony of these books is that they appear to be on opposite ends of the homeschool world philosophically. The first is A Mother's Rule of Life by Holly Pierlot. The other is A Little Way of Homeschooling by Suzie Andres. I have really enjoyed both of these books. The first of these books is a guidebook to using a Rule to order your day. Along with Ms. Pierlot's personal story, it is really an engaging and helpful book. The second book is a compendium of the stories of thirteen families who are approaching unschooling from a Catholic perspective.
I was looking for pumpkin carving ideas and found these at Catholic Cuisine. The above image is the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
